Blogger or WordPress? This post looks at two very popular free hosted blogging platforms – I was recently asked that if I had to start a blog from scratch and had no idea which was the best platform to choose, which platform would I use out of Blogger or WordPress assuming they were both recommended to me.
Well, both these platforms are awesome in their own rights without going any further, but before we get down to choice let me highlight some of the pros and cons of both platforms.
Let us start with Blogger… Blogger is probably the most popular blogging platform on the web, please correct me if I’m wrong otherwise… It was founded by American entrepreneur Evan Williams who also happens to be the creator of Twitter. Interestingly enough Evan Williams also invented the term ‘blogger’. Blogger or more commonly known as BlogSpot is now owned by Google and has been since 2003 and is used by millions of bloggers of all levels from around the globe.
Google Blogger is an extremely user friendly platform which is why it attracts many users. Newbies are drawn to blogger because it’s relatively easy to setup, add content to and monetize with Google AdSense and Amazon affiliates.
Users are able to use their own domain name and customize the look of their blogs theme to how they want it to look.
However unfortunately even with the new recent updates and improvements made to the Blogger dashboard, it still lacks the tools and features that WordPress has to offer. OK so here is a rundown of the pros and cons of using blogger as a start-up platform for your blog.

WordPress was founded by internet social media entrepreneur Matt Mullenweg in the 2003. WordPress.com alone is home to around 350,000 bloggers.
WordPress.com has become extremely popular because of both its complexity and ease of use, but yet remains one of the most powerful free hosted blogging platforms on the web.
Here are rundowns of the pros and cons of using WordPress hosted as a start-up platform for your blog.
Pros
If this is your first ever, ever blog and you have no idea where to start and don’t wish to get involved in too many complications, then I’d go for either platforms, I know this isn’t a great help perhaps but both are great blogging platforms. If you want a little more from your blog then definitely go for a Blogger.com blog.
If you’re feeling energetic and want to host your own blog entirely then maybe you might want to consider going down the self-hosted avenue. - Available in 50 languages
- You can purchase or transfer your own custom domain to your blogger blog for free
- You get built in visitor stats
- It’s easy to monetize with Google AdSense, Infolinks and Amazon Associates
- Blogger is powered by Google
- You can somewhat mildly customize with themes
- Limited premium themes
- Although you can, it’s not that easy to customize themes unless you’re a code wiz and are familiar with HTML and CSS
- Commenting feature a bit of a let down at times.
- Spam filter has no editing features
- Expandability limited without use of plugins
- Some people find it hard to view a BlogSpot powered blog as a professional blog…
- BlogSpot blogs have notorious security issues, hackers still love hacking into Blogger blogs

- Easy to use, no coding knowledge required…
- Available in 120 languages
- Theme editor available (paid service)
- Built in visitor stats
- Options for SEO
- Accessible anywhere, even from space… (well maybe not)
- Purchase your own domain or transfer (paid upgrade)
- Powerful spam filtering and comment moderating system
- Too many paid for services / upgrades required i.e. custom designs and custom domains etc
- No third party scripts allowed, that means no AdSense, Infolinks or Chitika…
- Template editing isn’t free
- WordPress use their own WordAds system which you can use to monetize your blog, should your blog qualify that is…
So which platform to use, Blogger or WordPress?
So you’re now thinking which platform should you use, Blogger or WordPress? It’s a tough one as I see both platforms great in their own respects; I would actually be more inclined to use WordPress.com even though there are optional premiums and limitations with monetization.
